Manure was a plentiful source of fertilizer when farmers had horses, cattle, and hogs on the farm. The barn was mucked out daily and the manure collected into stacks. They moved the manure to the manure spreader. Horses pulled it into the fields. The prongs on the turning wheel at the back of this manure wagon loosen the manure for even spreading as it is pitched by workers.
