Bee culture has been managed in the same way for the last hundred years. Hives are built in boxes with removable screens. Honey was a valuable natural source of sugar in the 1890s, along with molasses, which was made from the plant sorghum.
The bees that live in these hives will fly over the surrounding fields, meadows, and open land in search of pollen and nectar, which they bring home to the hive. Farmers can harvest what they need from a hive by scraping off some of the honeycomb and honey. The bees also pollinate plants.
