Grandfather taught him to shoot. He set up target & told him to keep shooting at it. Shot rabbits, dressed and sold them. Shot ducks. Trip to WY, Yellowstone to visit Charles Canterbury. Working trip. Horse-wrangling for room and board. Tie horse up at night & listen for bears. Scare with branding iron. Canterbury thrown from horse, broken ankle, trip 200 miles to train. In Yellowstone, camped next to the garbage dump by the lodge, so had to keep bears at bay at night. No car traffic in the park. You camped wherever you wanted. Horses got thin & he forgot water one day. Mentions chuck wagon. Back home, camped out near Torrance's Mill on Sangamon River for two weeks. Ran out of brought food, so fished, ate and sold fish for bread for a week.
