FARM FACILITIES
At 17, he helped haul lumber and frame parts from mill, where they grew and cut the trees - oak and ash with pine siding. Cows were milked in a straw shed, a structure of poles with timbers across and thresh laid on top. Horses had stalls. Miller Mort Hineman drew plans for barn for them,, as mother did not know how. Also had chickens and cats in barn.
TRANSPORTATION
Tells story about ferry across Sangamon River that could take a horse and wagon across with a self-service cable.
CHANGES IN FARM FACILITIES
Now grain goes to elevator. Used cribs before. Fences were made of rail in small places. For long runs he used barbed and patent wire fences. Had to fence in stalk fields when animals were feeding there. Laments the demise of hedges.
