- William Wertheim born in VT. Father & mother born in Germany. Tells of father getting start in livestock business in VT. Tells of other relatives coming from Germany & of life & school in VT. Story of going to Germany & not being able to speak much English on return to US. Mother helped him kill cattle & send them to New York. Story of first business transaction as a boy. Mentions father dying of kick from horse when William was 8 yrs old. Father went to Germany for visits & brought back a shepherd trained to drive cattle with German commands, not English. Tells of mother moving family to Illinois including a set of TX steer horns his father had. An uncle, Jake Eisenberg, invited them to come to Illinois. Travelled by train to Illinois. Remembers first buggy ride in Petersburg with Berta Katzenstein.
