Recipe for making and canning apple butter in a copper kettle over a fire. Recipe for cooking cubes of fat, adding wood ashes and a can of Louis Lye; leave overnight, fire up again, stir a little - you can cut it when it set. Details included. In winter, picked the ducks and geese feathers off to make pillows and feather beds. In summer, slept on shuck ticking. Used the soft inside layers of corn shuck six inches thick. Directions for making a carpet for the winter; tear up carpet rags (old wool clothes), sew the long ends together and roll into a ball; take to weaver.
