WOMEN'S WORK
Sew two old curtains together and fill with straw to make summer pillows, less hot than feathers.
CHILDHOOD ACTIVITIES
Enjoyed square dancing on the steamboat from Havana to Peoria. Boat offered entertainments, food like popcorn, sodas, and ice cream. Return at sundown. 1947 trip to CA. Another trip to KY.
FARM WORK
Her father helped at a lot of barn-raisings. Farmers traded labor for threshing crews. Party followed the threshing work. Threshing was a family gathering.
SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
Trips to Havana to Lawford Theatre for a film. Went on nature trails. Had sack lunches. School was from September to Decoration Day, 8
HOME REMEDIES
Family was in quarantine when ill. Put a note outside for someone to copy the list of what they needed from town. Mother burned sulfur in the house to fumigate and disinfect during illnesses. Then family could go germ-free to neighbors and school.
