FARM FACILITIES
Farming with horses & mules requires a lot of water. Good story of Charlie Clark water-witching a well location using a peach branch & discussion of digging well using shovels & windlass. "And you know, we couldn't pump that well dry."
FARMHOUSE
Water-well for house lined with limestone from bluffs over Sangamon River in what is now Carpenter Park. "Its awful good tasting water." Water-softener was lye.
FARM WORK
Mentions use of hog fat to make soap.
FARMHOUSE
Discussion of where to place outhouse away from well. Put lime into pit. Pit cleaned every year by people who did such work. Hole lined with wood. "I'm real happy that that's behind me….. You go out there in the wintertime, and the seat be covered with snow, and you brushed the snow off and sat down, and you didn't stay long." Mention of daughter Ruthie living through these times without electricity.
