FAMILY BACKGROUND
Mother was born 1868. Father died in 1937 in a automobile accident coming home from a cattle meeting in Springfield. Great-uncle and minister Charlie Barton wrote first complete history of Illinois College. Is also descended from Clara Barton. Bartons came to Jacksonville and Clarks came to Menard County in 1820's. Great-grandmother was a Winters born in Chazy, NY, went to finishing school, taught in OH, married another teacher, and moved with him to Athens, IL. Discusses her heritage.
CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Describes the system of school years and tests in the rural schools. Wore starched pinafores from going to city schools, and wanted a calico apron like the other children when she went to the rural school. Had better art and music programs when living in Colorado than at the rural school in Illinois. Describes taking the final tests for the eighth grade, for which she and her teacher had to go to Petersburg.
