ATTITUDE TOWARDS GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS
He is sure that the answer to farmers' economic problems is the competitive market system.
REFLECTIONS
He resigned from the presidency of the Farm Bureau after 16 years because it was stressful, meant he missed a lot of family life, and he did not want to overstay his time. When he retired he believed that there would be no more battles over federal farm policies again.
NON-FARM WORK
He returned home but thought himself too old to farm. Illinois governor asked him to be on Board of Regents. Meets one day a month, but requires research to keep up with issues. He learned that faculties were trying to run universities as a community, not as a business, which he thinks they are. So as a board member, he wants to strengthen the power of the President and Board. Faculty should be involved in educational policy and courses of study but not finance.
