In KY they has a spring house where they would get water and store milk. When built the new house in Illinois, dug a well.
FOOD & MEALS
Mother & children made butter in a churn. Describes how to churn butter. Used buttermilk to bake and drink. Pork was smoked or salted. Beef rarely stored because it couldn't be stored. Some made beef jerky. He always liked pancakes & maple syrup. In February, tap trees for maple syrup. Needed 40 gallons sugar water to make one quart syrup. Grew sorghum for sugar, too. Describes the sorghum plant.
CHILDHOOD ACTIVITIES
Mother made candy for Christmas. Hung stockings & received little presents. Played with cousins. Did not have non-related friends. Rode in horse-drawn sleds. No lakes to skate on or swim in. Went to river to swim and fish. Did not catch or eat that much fish. Chore was to take care of livestock. Mother made goose grease and turpentine remedies. Mentions asafetida worn around neck. No radio, but got a player piano he banged on.
