FAMILY BACKGROUND
Born Mt. Vernon IL, March, 1944. Two sisters, 1 brother (deceased). Moved to TX then back to Mt. Vernon. Moved to DeKalb in 6th grade. Father is a welder not farmer. Had some livestock. Mother was a homemaker. Took vacations together, went visiting, games in the yard. Mother did all cooking, had garden.
LIVESTOCK
Had some cattle, not sure what they were used for.
CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Walked to country school.
CHILDHOOD ACTIVITIES
Celebrated holidays with extended family. Went to Church as a family. Does not recall many social events through church. Roller skating in an open tent in Mt. Vernon. Folks did not have a TV until she was married. Does not watch TV. Played with neighbor children went sledding, & played house in the chicken house.
LIVESTOCK
Mother kept chickens for their own use.
CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Parents did not talk about expectations. Let children choose. Barb wanted to be a mother.
FAMILY
Met husband attending school in high school Malta. Husband 3 years older. Husband was a farmer. His father was a teacher not a farmer. He took over his families farm after his brothers were killed in an accident. Husband has lived in same house whole life.
LAND
They had 220 acres until the Toll way came through around 1972. Went down to 202 acres.
CROPS
Corn, soybeans, oats, and hay. Sells them through the elevator. Hay is sold to individuals.
LIVESTOCK
They have hogs. Go to packing plant in Rochelle. Her father brings some cattle and they have some custom slaughtered for their own meat.
