Brazil has good productive farming ground. Much of the area in the state of Mato Grosso has no history; lots of virgin farming.
FAMILY FARM
Talks about family farms in Brazil. One of his students' father has hectares in two states.
ENVIRONMENT
Describes how driving from rolling lands in OH to prairie in IL is much like areas near the Rainforest in Brazil. The rainforest is being cleared for timber and for livestock. Talks about the cerrado forest in Mato Grosso. Has poor acidic soil in the region.
TRANSPORTATION
No roads in Mato Grosso until the 1950s & only 50 miles of railroad.
FARMING METHODS
Can farm year-round. Not a rotation but a succession. Start in October, harvest in February or March. High demand for soy.
