NON-FARM WORK
Discussion of husband's first job on railroad mail route (runs). Had to take an exam to work for rail mail service. No zip codes then. Salary allowed purchase of first car, a Ford. Long rambling discussion. Notes where they lived when his job location changed.
FAMILY FINANCES
Irma tells of how they saved to pay off loan from her parents for first house. Then moved again & built house in Roodhouse.
RECOLLECTIONS
Husband was drafted & had to go to boot camp again. Spent his time in mail service in San Francisco. Tells of living quarters in CA & trip home while pregnant due to Wilbur being notified of pending deployment to Japan. Irma heard of atomic bomb drop while on train. She returned to San Francisco after daughter's birth & then they returned to IL. Reflections on atomic bomb. Remembers hearing of start of Pearl Harbor attack in Alton before draft. Irma stayed with her parents when Wilbur was in boot camp. Description of life in San Francisco apartment.
