- RELIGION
- Rick's father is Roman Catholic and his mother is Lutheran. His family did not participate much in the social aspect of church. They would switch churches often because his dad would get frustrated with the priest. They went to the Catholic church in Kewanee and in Minnesota when they lived there.
- CHILDHOOD WORK
- In the summer he would walk beans and crop silage.
- FARM BUSINESS
- There were a few medium sized dairy farms nearby. He has never had an interest in industrial agriculture, but has been trying a small scale farm for the last several years.
- LAND ACQUISITION
- His family had a farm from 1880 to 1980 in St. Jacob.
- FARM FACILITIES
- After he graduated from U of I, Rick joined the Marine Corp Reserves and went to engineering school. Later he learned that Illinois' timber resources were not being handled appropriately. So he decided to start building barns with Illinois timber. He also came to this decision because he feels responsible for burning down a barn and wants to rectify that. Since then he has fixed probably 100 barns.
