EDUCATION
Born in 1946 in New York City & went to school there. Attended college at Clemson University in South Carolina, majoring in Food Technology. Knew in high school he liked the sciences. Graduated from Clemson in 1968. After coming back in 1973 from the Peace Corps, studied at the University of Florida. Became familiar with soybeans there. Studied at U of I and graduated in 1981.
NON-FARM WORK
Joined the Peace Corps where he worked in Fiji where he met wife there. Liked the idea of going to a far away place and it would be neat and different. Worked with the agricultural extension & farmers in Fiji. Helped with recommendations of plants and insecticide. Worked with them for four years. After four years, realized how similar the wants and needs were for people who looked and acted different to us in America.
COMMODITY PRICES
Had contract with the Russians, and price of soybeans went way up, around $18 a bushel in the 1970s.
FARM-RELATED WORK
Began working an international research institution after getting his degree. Worked for the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture as a food technologist in Nigeria. After, began working for INTSOY or International Soybean Program. Working on expanding the use of soybeans. Internationally, they are trying to utilize and process the use of soybeans all over the world.
