- FARMING METHODS
- Mr. Nelson's dad was a firm believer in no-till/low-till. They had smaller equipment, but also less acreage. People using bigger equipment to reduce passes over the fields. Today, the increased genetics have eliminated the tradeoffs. In the late 1960s/early 1970s there was a blight that effected the corn yields. It could wipe out 50% of your yield. Modern seeds are hybrids that have genetic resistance to blight and pests. Phillip served on the first USDA Biotechnology board. They dealt with a hybrid of corn that had been bio-engineered and got into the marketplace. He does not think something like that will happen again. Europe (specifically Green Peace) have been resistant.
