CROPS
Today many people afraid of where their food is coming from and afraid of quality and sanitation. Many people ignorant of where fruit comes from. The orchard does school tours.
WORK
Bring in young people to pick. To pick the peaches they use bags that open at the bottom. The refrigerated freight car was invented in Cobden because it was the largest fruit producing area in the United States, before California and Georgia. They shipped peaches, strawberries and daffodils. The peach is fragile so you have to pick with your whole hand. The stem comes off because it is extremely short.
ETHNICITY
Betty talks about the issue of speaking Spanish and her knowledge. She has very good knowledge of Spanish concerning the orchards but little else. It helps that the same people work there every year so they do not have to train.
FARMING METHODS
Weed killer is washed away by a lot of rain. The rows are kept in sod at all times, but under the trees they try to stop the growth of grass.
