FAMILY BACKGROUND
Had a good time growing up, brothers and sisters. Participated in 4-H Club. Evelyn was born in DeKalb County. Parents were farmers. Went to school with future husband. Tells how he asked her out.
CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Lists the schools she attended. She always wanted to be a teacher. Remembers girls had to sign a contract where they had to teach when they graduated for as many years as they was in school. Attended class Monday through Friday. NIU was different depending on subjects one studied. Remembers May-Fete, with the Maypole.
CHURCH ACTIVITIES
Attends church, she's the organist. Was on committees, taught Sunday School. People's responsibility in the church. Church was important to her, programs to take part in, community -oriented.
FARM ORGANIZATIONS
Farm Bureau provided crop sales assistance, new things to help agriculture. Evelyn belongs to the Homemakers' Extension, an adult education organization.
NEIGHBORS
They work & are busy. They are there for each other when people are in need. Evelyn is in a different age group than her neighbors.
FAMILY
parents and grandparents born in the States. Lots of the family is close by. Evelyn's sister helps her with sewing.
TOWNS
She goes into town sometimes, 1-3 times a week, it depends. Especially for grocery shopping. DeKalb or Sycamore for that. Doesn't like to drive that much, but likes to be independent.
WOMEN'S WORK
Shares decisions with her husband, talks over problems with him. Doesn't want to go back into teaching, discipline would be more of a problem these days.
