CHILDHOOD WORK
Went barefooted in summer. Marie fed and watered the horses, washed dishes, helped with milking and butter making. Did not refuse to do work. "Did what I was told."
CHILDHOOD ACTIVITIES
Went to visit cousins, friends, church picnics at Thomas Grove. Labor Day picnic.
TRANSPORTATION
Took an hour to get to Chatham from Divernon; Took 3 to 3 1/2 hours to Springfield. When in high school, she took the Illinois Central train up to town. Took the Wabash RR to see her aunt in Keokuk, IA. Aunt was principal of school in IA.
HEALTH
Only went to the village doctor when really sick. Marie only had a few colds. Had tonsils out in high school. Whole family had whooping cough one year.
FAMILY
Mother read the family stories. Grandmother and aunt came to live when youngest son took over their farm. Read "Raggedy Dick", Youth Companion, and the State Journal. Her father taught one year and was interested in education. Father & son were both on school board.
CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Graduated from grade school in 1911.
