Mary Stark in 2009

Mary Stark at age 93. Born in 1916, she has lived through a period of massive technical changes in agriculture. Her photographs show that when she was born, horses did the heavy work on the farm, like plowing and carrying heavy loads. Then steam engines and gas-powered engines changed farming radically. The took the place of horses, expecially after the 1930s. Crops became less diversified as oats were no longer necessary for horse feed. Corn and soybeans became the crops of choice. Farms became larger for economy of scale.
