FAMILY BACKGROUND
Mentions birthdates in 1898, family names, ethnicity, careers of father, causes of death. Mother was Irish, father was English. Father taught school & farmed weekends & nights. Mentions 2yr old brother dying of pneumonia before doctor could get to farm by horseback.
CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
"Education & religion were 2 of the most important things in our lives." You have to have an education…." Many family members & relatives were teachers. Mrs. Saiter gives detailed description of schoolhouse & school supplies. Most work on blackboard, no crayons. Older students had a slate & 1 slate pencil per year. Description of the slate & 2-sided slate owned by some older students. In discussing school supplies & what kids have today, she states, "We never had those things, so we did not miss them."
