CHANGES IN ENVIRONMENT
As farmers expanded, Ruth notes they quit planting small grain (i.e., wheat, oats), planted row crops took down fences, & tore out hedge rows that reduced cover for wildlife. Deer & pheasants disappeared for a while, but are coming back.
