- Bert notes how lime was applied before lime-spreaders. At first lime was spread by the shovelful from wagons. Then the lime was then disked into the ground "so it wouldn't blow away." Then it was ready to harrow & sow alfalfa seed. Also learned to sow the alfalfa in the fall so it would grow a bit before winter & would live through winter.
