Mr. Herndon's law firm did not handle much legal work dealing with coal mining, except for collecting for workers' on-job injuries. There were many coal mines in central Illinois. Strip mining took place on land not very fit for farming. When the companies recovered the land and left, the land was fit for pastures and growing other crops.
