CHANGES FARM BUSINESS
Sizes of farms will continue to increase. More specialization into niches & branded products like Certified Angus Beef. Natural type beef means no growth hormones, etc. Organic-type beef with grass-fed, pastures, certified. Fifty different brands in the States. Includes methods of production, breeds. Efficiency of production is necessary to reduce costs. Reduce costs from hay to crop residues to winter cows. Ethanol by-products supplement residue foods. Some breeders may move back to Midwest.
LIVESTOCK
Consumers want more information about breeds, characteristics of meat. Plays a bigger role in marketing. We track all animals from farm to market because consumer wants to know more. Premise ID is to try to prevent disease spread. Packers are now demanding a premise ID to sell to them. Even want individual animal ID. Electronic ID on a button tag. Country of origin ID.
