SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
Describes graduation ceremony and part for grade school. Also had a ceremony at the County Superintendent's offices. They put on a program for class night. She had three dresses. Graduation night nine girls and two boys got their diplomas on stage. Her junior year party. Students came dressed how they thought they would dress forty years later. Marie had glee club, literary club.
CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Her subjects were four per semester. No chemistry, good physics, some home economics, algebra and geometry. She took German. Staff made up of a principal and several teachers. She was admitted to college with no exams. She did homework in high school.
FARM BUSINESS
Marie practiced math by helping her father with the bills on his contract to sell feed to the mine for the mules.
NON-FARM WORK
Describes how mules worked the mines, their temporary blindness, accident rate.
MARRIAGE
Mentions she took her wedding party 360 feet down the mine as an entertainment.
CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Marie read Dickens and other authors at the school library. Few discipline problems. Principal just sat boys in a chair & ignored them. No problem with girls, who did not date much or get into trouble. Girls wore floor-length dresses. She wore hers 4 inches from ankles and got teased.
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
Went to basketball games. "Got to see the boys in shorts." Sometimes went to Springfield for lunch at Connelly's or the Food Center. It took 40 minutes on the Interurban trolley, which had stops at Cotton Hill, Toronto, Glenarm, Pawnee Junction, and Divernon. Attended track meets.
