- Bert discusses several medicines he used as a child & young adult. Calomel is made from mercury (diluted it was called "blue-mass") & was used as a laxative. Mentions that castor seed is poisonous & would kill horses. Took castor-oil with soda-water. Castor-oil also used as lubricant for machinery. Mentions treatment for colic & open wounds. - FARM EQUIPMENT
- Bert describes hickory hoops used to bind cotton bales & seeder used to separate seeds from cotton fiber. Hot, dusty work in cotton-gin & many workers were negroes who sang at quitting time. Discusses grading of cotton, compressing 500 lb bales & "niggers' lifting them. "….those niggers were treated terrible." (addenda item# 41, see Aikman 5, Clip# 773)
