- Mentions 4th of July celebration in Raymond. Volunteer band played & Bert marched with them. Mentions horse races at track, bicycle, & foot races, greased pole & greased pig competition. Merchants put up prizes. Sack-races were funny. Describes potato races. States that girls did not partake in competitions. Mentions Coxey Poggehpohl catching greased pig in his new clothes. Mentions "woodmen" picnics had much the same entertainment. July 4th celebration & woodmen picnic were the highlights of those times. Fireworks display with pictures of American flag or Uncle Sam. "It beat the cakewalks a hundred miles." Barrels of ice-water, which was real treat. Ice shipped in by train from WI. Later they had ice-cream & soda stands. Bert recalls his 1st soda. Much more fizz than today. Soda stand under cottonwood tree at Raymond Depot. (addenda item# 59, see Aikman 6, Clip# 777)
