FAMILY BACKGROUND
Born in KY in 1898. Had four brothers. Father raised tobacco & wheat in KY. Lived with grandfather till he remarried. Went to one-room school (log construction) with male teacher. Moved to Illinois in 1906; Uncles had moved to IL and liked it, so rest of family moved.
HIRED HELP
Father was hired man on two farms near Greenview owned by Mr. Blaine. Lived in a house and worked on a farm. Salaries for hired help is greater now. Salary was $30/month plus house, garden, orchard, & meat. Her grandson is a hired man on a Greenview area farm (1973).
GARDEN
Had a large garden & canned tomatoes, beans, kraut, pickles. Field beans grew in corn fields. Bought a tree or a share of the fruit on a tree. Dried apples, peaches, and apricots on a sheet over an old door on top of a shed. Cut in half, lay seed-side up for several days. Dried apples by peeling them and slicing them, laying them out on the door, store them in flour sacks.
