Notes age (born in 1890) & tells of parents, grandparents, children, etc. who lived on this original 'old home place', built about 1874. Married in 1916, had four children. His father died when he was six & mother died in 1942. He had to help mother and hired man farm.
CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
He attended up to grade eight only because he had work at home to do, such as hogs, cattle, horses, and chickens.
TRANSPORTATION
Had up to eight horses, for two 4-horse teams and a buggy mare. Got buggies in Springfield and Peoria for $80-$130. Had multiple types of harnesses for each task. Trained own horses.
LIVESTOCK
Had sheep until 1973. By then, too many dogs in subdivisions around him - loose dogs got into packs and attacked sheep. Liked sheep because they ate weeds and made grassy areas look nice.
LAND
Farm looked similar to old times, especially rough areas. Nearby farm now growing evergreens &; others farms bulldozed for subdivisions.
