RETIREMENT
Visited son in Wilmington, CA, with daughter via plane to Los Angeles from Bloomington through O'Hare Airport, but snow caused troubles in the flights. Had an overbooked plane on the flight back to Chicago. Daughter took care of most arrangements and luggage. Visited son in New Orleans, near Lake Charles, saw the ocean and attended church.
REFLECTIONS
Remembers the large railroad explosion in 1958 when they lived on Route 121. Shaking broke a window upstairs. Roads were all gravel then. Recalls two times when she was not paid for sewing.
FAMILY BACKGROUND
Recalls that her stepmother was once their hired girl and was 16 years younger than the father. Father died at 43 in 1910, and stepmother was 27. Father went to Colorado for two years for his health but came back soon after. He taught for 13 years before Ms. Patterson's birth. An overhead bridge was destroyed in the explosion in Mt. Pulaski and killed a man. Recalls a tornado that killed a child in Chestnut.
