Nuckolls and Hugh McGill, former state senator, served on the Auburn Fire District as it was organizing (1946-48). Describes the process of fund-raising & taxation to buy fire fighting equipment. Vernon McMillan picked up fire truck at Red Bud, IL. Built a firehouse and recruited volunteers to build a volunteer fire department for Auburn and surrounding countryside. Firehouse located where tennis courts were located. Describes their siren and phone system to notify firemen of an alarm. They had training sessions by burning down houses set for demolition. Discusses methods of fire suppression and a fatal fire in the past. Moved their headquarters so those east of the railroad could get faster service.
