- He thought that farming was getting tough in the 1930s with the Depression. Pearl asked him why he didn't get a tractor. He replied that he would if he had money. She did not like to see horses hurting. So she gave him some money and he bought an Oliver tractor and John Deere cultivators, a plow, and a disc harrow for $1350. She said he could take her money and if she didn't get it back, she had the satisfaction of knowing she helped some horses.
