FAMILY BACKGROUND
William Hubbard was born in 1900 southeast of Rochester, IL in Sangamon County. He was one of eight sons. Lists names of brothers.
TENANT FARMING
Diversified farm. They had customers for their eggs that they delivered. His father farmed 160 acres in wheat, corn oats and millet with mules and horses. Hay baler, combine. Cash rent of $6 per acre. When he left the farm 13 years later, the rent was $13 per acre. William thinks he lacked the confidence to borrow money to buy the farm - did not know what future yields might be or if sons would stay on the farm. Instead he bought a house and six lots in Springfield for his retirement.
