Started dairy farming in 1988. Got into raising horses slowly. Buildings house cattle, horses. Grows feed for livestock. Raises Belgian Draft Horses. His best stud, Extreme, was a national champion. Describes the attributes of a good horse, physical, mental. Son raises Holstein cattle.
FARMING METHODS
Divided pastures into 12 acre plots. Useful for hand methods. Can cut corn, manure fields of that size in one day. Corn, oats, alfalfa rotation. Explains the difficulties related to growing alfalfa. Deep tillage equipment and tiling help drain the land. Years ago there were fewer insects and lots of tiling. Says chemicals messed up the balance of good and bad bugs. Compares to big farmers. Base price at market is set by the government. Prairie Farms Dairy is one of the best. Has to meet standards.
