RELIGION
Her mother was a Catholic, but lost interest. Her father made a vow, so he made them go to church. She liked the choir. In college she attended a service in Eagle Rock that shocked her, so she left the church.
EDUCATION
Evanston High School had 5000 students, a huge campus and blocks. Had a library, theaters, halls, sports fields, and other amenities. Intellectual attitudes of students. Describes daily schedule of homerooms, lunch, etc. She did musicals, chorus, plays. No competitive sports for girls. Old-fashioned dress codes. She heard about Occidental College in high school. Went to pre-med in CA, but found she hated the labs because they were indoors. Dropped pre-med and changed to music, then theater. Did one year of graduate work for education credentials. Taught in Mission Viejo for a year. She married a doctor and moved to New Orleans. She taught in the public schools for a year. Overwhelmed her with the difficulty, sadness. Had five sections of seventh grade English - some sections separated by sex, a plan of the principal. Eight people had had her job in two months when she arrived. Left after a year and returned to grad school at Tulane in theater history. Divorced and visited a friend in Illinois, Mossback, and fell in love with the driftless area.
