- Discusses raising children in a rural area in the 1980s. Few neighbors to play with. She and her husband played with their kids. Farm kids had work to do, but hers did not. Had to ride a bus to school at seven a.m. or earlier. She drove her youngest herself. School consolidation causes long bus trips, did not increase offerings, but led to more flexibility, increased diversity. Schools were old, small, but the teachers were wonderful. Chadwick students were uninterested in intellectual pursuits. Milledgeville students were clever and mischievous.
