GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS
Hated 1960s policies of leaving land fallow. Learning experience for all. Programs now are more flexible. Farm Bureau listened and took complaints to Washington, but no rebellious group. Story about FDR and farm programs. County called for a county-wide meeting of farmers to discuss leaving acres fallow.
FARM ORGANIZATIONS
It is all right. Big issue is the limitations on each farm about subsidies. Farm bill works okay now.
FARM EQUIPMENT
Son-in-law has GPS tractor. Leland thinks the science and technology takes all the fun out of farming. Best part of farming for him was finally having enough acreage to feel like a viable farmer. Son-in-law helped him for six years. Son has taken over his farm. Cash rent system. Leland still helps out with auger. Technology intimidates him. Neighbors helped each other. Story of lime-spreading together.
ACTIVITIES
