LIVESTOCK
Roger thinks there are more hogs now than when he was president, but the number of people who own hogs has diminished. 20 pork producers own the sows that produce half of the pork in the US. Has reduced disease. He now rents his facilities instead of seeing the hogs through the whole process. Roger is part of a buying cooperative, which allows him to buy hogs at the same price as a large scale producer.
LAND
Land prices in the area have gone "up and down." One specific farm sold for $400 to $500 an acre, now goes for $4000 to $5000. He says they are generally continually going up.
TOWNS
Population in the towns nearby has been pretty level.
SCHOOL CONSOLIDATION
The creation of Prairie Central has been beneficial to the towns. Roger served as a school board member for several years, starting in 1983-4. This was before the consolidation. The twenty one board members held a vote and all the communities but Chatsworth voted to consolidate. After the meeting, Chatsworth reconsidered and changed their vote. Calvin Jackson was the superintendant from Fairbury. In October they attended around 60 meetings to inform the voters about the consolidation. When they voted in November, it was overwhelmingly successful.
