FAMILY BACKGROUND
Born in DeKalb County. Lives in house he grew up in. Mentions education before college.
COLLEGE EDUCATION
Went to University of Illinois & was pre-med major until he realized he missed tractors and farm life.
CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Was the valedictorian, surprised himself with his good grades, importance of putting effort into work/life.
FAMILY BACKGROUND
Has younger sister who is married to agriculture teacher. Father was a farmer. Clausen tells of dad having to quit school to help on farm, but younger children got more formal education. Father's elder siblings went to work on family farm.
LAND ACQUISITION
120 acres. Grandfather bought it in 1916, Clausen's sister owns part, still comes back, She has great personal connection to farm.
FARMING DURING WWII
Was almost draft age in 1944. Had considered enlisting earlier when Dad had a heart attack, but stayed out to help the family with the farm. Clausen would have preferred to serve, is very patriotic, was willing. Dad finally well enough to handle things & Clausen could attend college. 1100-1200 acres that the 2 of them farmed.
FARM ORGANIZATIONS
Belonged to Farm Bureau. Discusses benefits of membership & being made aware of legislation. Notes diversity in farming across the nation.
