- GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS
- James gives views about Roosevelt programs like WPA & "start of give away programs." Story of supervisor helping workers with family needs by giving them a purchase order.
- GREAT DEPRESSION
- Got married in 1930 when Hoover was defeated. People in country in Great Depression did not have it as bad as people in city. Gives price of hamburger in Depression.
- UNIONS
- Discussion of formation of labor union in oil business in mid 1940s. Started as secret meetings. Before 1945 contract there were no vacation days, no benefits, etc. Description of various jobs in oil field work including roustabouts & pumpers. Talk of an Oil Worker Union scared town merchants who thought oil company would just leave. Later meetings became public as support grew.
