- FAMILY BACKGROUND
- Fred has been married twice. Got married to first wife after the war and had three children. She died in 1976 from a brain tumor. He married again in 1978 to a woman he had known for a while and she had 2 kids and a couple of grandchildren. She is still around and they live in the supportive living complex. Born in 1920. Active farmer until around 1989. Did 4-H for awhile, had beef cattle.
- FARMING DURING WWII
- Helped father with farming until the war broke out. Wasn't going to try for a deferment, said he'd wait until his time came, which was in February 1942. Took basic training in Arkansas & then to Camp Hood, TX. Went from sergeant to second lieutenant. Stayed with his same battalion all four years he was in the army.
