- CHURCH ACTIVITIES
- Church they attend today is smaller, needed the bigger congregation to put on the suppers.
- FAMILY ACTIVITIES
- Close family. Recalls Bill's father brother was near, everyone got together for birthdays, Sunday dinners. Didn't have much money, recreation was things that didn't cost much! Only went to one movie that first year! Married in 1940. Lived within their means.
- FARM ORGANIZATIONS
- Joining seemed to be the thing to do. (difficult to hear)
- NEIGHBORS
- Don't see them as much, knew the previous owners better, generation gap. During WWII, saw & spent time with neighbors more often.
- FAMILY
- Some of immediate family has moved away. Didn't encourage children to farm. Describes children's interests, occupations. Martha talks about importance of education, depending on brains versus physical labor (though both are fine!).
- FARMING DURING WWII
- Describes country's welcome of returning soldiers. Government needed certain crops during the war. (difficult to hear) Mentions government contracts.
- DISCIPLINE
- Both disciplined the children, but Martha did more often since she was home with them. No spankings.
