AGRO-CHEMICALS
Has a ground tester who recommends what they should use to maximize the yield. They treat the ground to ward off bugs. Father used DDT, Jack never did. It's against the law, gone.
CROPS
Uses hybrid seeds. Anecdote about someone who tried to replant it. Compares his yield to his dad's.
FARM EQUIPMENT
Mentions his tractors' brands. John Deere is expensive, they buy new and used equipment. Things were tough earlier, now they can buy new now. Cheaper isn't better. But John Deere is too expensive, not worth it, doesn't buy that. Jack can service his equipment usually.
NON-FARM WORK
Hates driving, mostly does local work. Goes into DeKalb, not too often though. Mostly country work. Has done the plumbing for 9 years & has always been paid. "Country people are honest." Pay in cash, don't really trade services. Jack does trade farm labor with a few folks.
WOMEN'S WORK
works off the farm for a CPA during tax season. She's a good worker on the farm too though! Can make some money for herself doing the CPA work. That money goes to the family and herself.
FAMILY FINANCES
Jack notes that they wouldn't be as successful if he didn't do his outside work. They'd stay alive, but wouldn't be as comfortable. He likes to keep busy too.
GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS
Government isn't always on top of things, always new programs, those always change. Attend Farm Bureau meetings to figure out what went on. Jack's not an active member, but does his pesticide license through that.
