CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Remembers 2 older men (32 & 27 yrs old) attending classes "same as a scholar". Discusses certificates needed to be a teacher. Notes there were 2 certificates "2nd grade" & "1st grade". School books were expensive & were passed down to younger siblings. Used "Sander's" readers & spellers & "Ray's" Arithmetic. Used blackboard. Students had a "slate" not paper notebooks. Used slate pencil on the slate. Did not have pencils. Chalk used on blackboard. Mentions a student's job was to clean erasers once a wk. Organized sports not played between schools, only spelling contests. Carried a "dinner bucket". Got dessert if mother had it. He despises sorghum molasses. Family raised sorghum.
BEEKEEPING
Dad was a bee keeper & they had honey all the time.
CLOTHES
Discusses clothes & prices of overalls ($0.50), shirts, shoes, & boots. Boots more expensive. Bert felt sorry for girls that had to wear boots.
