FAMILY
Describes the old home place near Bridgeport, IL in 1918, the year of the big snow five feet deep, where you could ice skate for four miles over fields and fences. Describes trying to help father deliver dairy milk to town. Lists brothers and their ages. Snow closed roads. Neighbors got together to clear road. Story of undelivered milk freezing.
CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
Had to walk two miles to school. Did not teach every grade every year. He and two friends went through school together. Each 'class' would go to front to recite in turn.
FARM WORK
At four a.m. they fed and milked the cows, fed horses. Describes how to cool the cans of milk in a cooler full of water.
TRANSPORTATION
Dad bought 1919 Model T Touring car for $385. Could only use it part of the year when roads were dry. Used a buggy or a buckboard wagon. Hauled the milk cans on a bed built into it. Drove down each street and delivered milk to home customers. He helped from age seven.
