- FAMILY BACKGROUND
- Describes grandparents. Talks about grandparents being Pennsylvania Dutch and Lutheran who stuck together as a group. Grandfather made furniture for the house.
- CHURCH
- Attended church with grandmother, who had arthritis. Tells story about not being able to kneel. She owned a mill on a pond that was used for baptisms by several churches, even in winter through the ice.
- CLOTHES
- Describes the mill and how it ground flour, sifting it through silk fabric, which they used later to make clothes. Grandmother dyed the silk with berries and set it in vinegar. Also dyed [linsey-woolsey] cloth they made from wool. Grandfather made shoes for the nine children.
