FOOD & MEALS
As a child, she observed butchering, the smokehouse, and cellar full of canned fruit and vegetables. She helped her grandmother by labeling the cans in English. Describes how she made kraut with vinegar, water, spices, and a large covered crock weighted down with a cloth-wrapped brick. She produced milk, butter, and cottage cheese (she called smearcase).
WOMEN'S WORK
Grandmother Walker owned the farm, a mill, the store, the lumberyard, and twelve houses. She hired managers to run them. Very generous to the needy with food gifts. Later sold all but the store, which a son, George, ran.
