- Artificial insemenation (AI) is widely used. He estimates that 90% of AIed cows are insemenated by four or five bulls. You have to identify when the cows are ready to be bred, which used to mean visual observation. Rump pads are used that rub off and show green when the cow has been mated. Heat Watch is also used, which is a transponder with a button that counts how many times a cow has been mated. Sometimes if you are observing, the cows might be in a false heat, which leads to a loss of labor and time. The strengths and weakness of every bull is known. When mating, you want to compliment the cow's weakness with the strengths of the bull.
